One of the primary reasons for utilizing Architectural Psychology is to create restorative settings and supportive environments. The creation of such an environment can significantly contribute to one’s sense of psychological well-being and behavioral effectiveness.
We are not separate from our environment. As such, our environment can either increase or decrease our levels of physical and emotional well-being. For example, stress is an unavoidable fact of life, particularly in today’s world. Coping with stress involves a number of options with regard to one’s environment. One option is to modify the physical environment in order to create a supportive environment where stress-inducing stimuli can be more effectively managed. Since some degree of stress is always present and unavoidable, another option is to create restorative and supportive settings conducive to “unwinding.” An environment that provides solitude, serenity, privacy, etc. People tend to seek out places where they feel competent, confident, positive, secure, and content. These are restorative and supportive environments.
